The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, formerly abbreviated as GNAM, underwent a complete restyling and resettling since the new director, formerly director at Mart Cristiana Collu and art historian, took over. After several months of partial closure, the museum first reopened part of the first floor for the temporary exhibition The Lasting this summer and then, on October 10th, inaugurated the new arrangement of the permanent collection.
Curated by Saretto Cincinelli, the temporary exhibition The Lasting. L’intervallo e la durata opened in June and will be on show until January 27th. The show brings together the distant concepts of the interval and the lasting of time in art through a unified display that is intelligently aware of the surrounding space. From the Galleria’s enormous collection, about thirty artworks were selected, not based on their historical generation but with regards to the thematic matter. The temporary exhibition was conceived as an introduction to the prospective reopening of the permanent collection; in fact, the underlying principles and ideas anticipate those of Time is Out of Joint.
Time is Out of Joint is the temporary rearrangement of the permanent collection, named after Shakespeare’s Hamlet’s idea of a disjunction in the linear course of time. The disjunction is not only provided by the redistribution and combination of works regardless of a chronological order, but also by the absence of panels separating the spaces, ultimately making the visitor’s attention flow and shift freely within and among the rooms. The downside is that the absence of a map or of a delineated path may result as disturbing to the visitors. Although it might seem very fitting to wander, get lost, and slip out of joint, the risk is the possibility of missing some rooms. Similarly to the MAXXI, the permanent collection has gained a temporary fashion: the rearrangement will, in fact, change after April 15 2018 and cyclically rotate. As a last remark, the new media tools used are very innovative and user friendly: the renovated website is fresh and clear, and a revolutionary app was projected.
There are subjects in art that do not interest only an artist or an artistic group and are not strictly bound to a geographical or historical eras but constantly recur throughout time. These subjects are the ones making all art become a unicum, a totality of occurrences and reoccurrences merging, shifting, and interchanging. That of La Galleria Nazionale is a poignant attempt to bring together what belongs together, silencing historical linearity and assembling fresh juxtapositions of ancient beauties and beasty presents.
