An invasive species of poisonous toads is growing in Florida, especially putting at risk the lives of pets who may come into contact with these animals and could cause death.Cane toads are also known as giant, bufo or marine toads and secrete a powerful milky white toxin called bufotoxin when threatened by predators and can kill them in as little as 15 minutes.Dogs and cats could also pose a danger to toads, who could poison them to defend themselves. For this reason, pet owners must be vigilant when walking them or even in the yards of their homes. These amphibians are reddish-brown or gray-brown in color and have pale yellow or beige bellies. They can also be solid color or with dark spots on the body and measure between 6 and 9 inches. The glands that are behind their eyes are the ones that emanate the poison, so people and animals must be prevented from touching them.Normally these toads are in urban areas such as patios, near buildings, canals and ponds and they reproduce all year round in stagnant water.Although these amphibians eat plants, birds and small reptiles, insects, among others, the food of people and pets can attract them, so it is recommended not to leave waste outside the houses and cover the garbage containers well.
