APPLETON - A structural mishap has stopped the construction of the Appleton YMCA's $7.5 million parking ramp at 120 S. Oneida St.

Bill Breider, president and CEO of YMCA of the Fox Cities, said a precast concrete double-tee span on the second floor fell and damaged a first-floor pillar. It occurred at the west end of the ramp.

"The good news is that nobody was hurt, and in fact there was nobody on-site at the time," Breider told The Post-Crescent. "We think it happened sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning."

Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction is the general contractor for the project. Five days ago, Hoffman posted a photo on LinkedIn showing a double-tee span being lowered into place.

Breider said an evaluation of the situation is being conducted and that the YMCA is waiting for the results to determine the next steps. The site has been stabilized, he said.

"We don't know the extent of the damage at this point," Breider said. "We think within the next two days we should have a really good analysis done and a plan for moving forward."

Construction of the new parking ramp started last fall and is scheduled to be finished in August. It will have three stories and 303 stalls and will replace the Soldiers Square parking ramp, a fixture of downtown Appleton for more than 50 years before it was razed last year.

During construction, the Appleton YMCA, 218 E. Lawrence St., has advised its members and participants to use a temporary surface parking lot located south of the YMCA on land owned by U.S. Venture.
