CHICAGO — Chicago will ban its police officers from assisting out-of-state law enforcement in investigating people who travel here for abortions under an executive order signed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday.
The new directive comes a month after the U.S. Supreme Court ended nearly 50 years of constitutional protection for abortion in a stunning overturning of Roe v. Wade, leaving Illinois as the Midwest’s haven state for the procedure or medication that has been banned in about half the country since then.

Two people in Wisconsin who believe false claims that the 2020 election was marred by widespread fraud admitted they broke state election law by requesting absentee ballots for others. Racine County Sheriff Scott Schmaling issued a statement Thursday saying that two people contacted his office saying they believe the state’s website that facilitates absentee ballot requests is vulnerable to fraud. Schmaling did not release their names, and neither has been charged. However, one man acknowledged to The Associated Press that he ordered 10 ballots for people, and asked that they be sent to his home. The state Elections Commission says the website is no more vulnerable to fraud than an absentee ballot request by mail since requesters have to supply the same information.
Three former Minneapolis police officers went before a federal judge during the last week to be sentenced for violating George Floyd’s civil rights, and for each man, U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson handed out penalties well below what prosecutors sought and below federal guidelines. While Derek Chauvin got 21 years in federal prison, the other officers got sentences ranging from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years. For some Floyd family members and activists, the penalties were too small — and a bitter reminder of a justice system they say does not treat all people equally. Floyd's uncle, Selwyn Jones, said the judicial system favored people who should be locked up forever.

He has been impressed with the three-time Pro Bowler. The Browns are still awaiting word on whether Watson will be suspended by the NFL for violating its personal conduct policy. A fire chief says sunlight magnified by glass bottles in an open garbage can ignited paper trash, starting a 500-acre North Texas wildfire that destroyed five homes. The July 18 fire on Possum Kingdom Lake's western shore took eight days to contain fully. Chief Bonnie Watkins of the Possum Kingdom West Volunteer Fire Department says she found a trash can packed with paper goods, food and numerous glass bottles. She says a wind gust opened the can lid, sunlight magnified by the glass bottles ignited the paper, and the fire built rapidly and spread to nearby cedar trees.
A producer for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’s media company tried to paint a sympathetic portrait of him as a jury decides how much in financial damages he should pay for his past claims that the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school was a hoax. The sympathetic portrayal of the bombastic Jones drew immediate rebuke Thursday from attorneys for the parents suing Jones for at least $150 million for the abuse they say they’ve suffered for years because of Jones’ false statements about the slaying of their child in the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. Courts in Texas and Connecticut have already found Jones liable for defamation for his portrayal of the slayings as a hoax aimed at increasing gun control.
Officials at Tulsa Public Schools say they've removed two sexually graphic books from school libraries following criticism from several elected leaders. The district released a statement Thursday saying they intend to more carefully review books in question. Secretary of Education Ryan Walters says when he posted images from the books “Gender Queer" and “Flamer" on his Facebook page, the social media company quickly censored his post. The images include depictions of gay sex and masturbation. Walters, State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister and Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat were among those who criticized the district for making the books available to students.
Argentina’s government has announced the appointment of an economic “super minister,” its third economy minister in less than a month as the country struggles with high inflation and a slumping currency. President Alberto Fernández’s government said Thursday that Sergio Massa will head a new ministry that combines the current Economy, Productive Development, and Agriculture ministries. Massa is now leader of Congress' lower house and will have to resign his legislative seat to take the Cabinet post. His appointment comes only a few weeks since the left-leaning Silvina Batakis was tapped as economy minister after the more moderate Martín Guzmán abruptly quit, saying he wasn’t getting political support in dealing with Argentina’s economic woes. Massa is viewed as more of a moderate.

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax says he recently met with the FBI to discuss his concerns about the two 2019 sexual assault allegations against him. Fairfax has consistently denied the allegations and has long asserted they were part of a politically motivated smear campaign. He says he met for several hours with the FBI in June. Three other people confirmed to The Associated Press that they had been interviewed about the allegations. An FBI spokeswoman declined comment. Attorneys for Fairfax's accusers have defended their clients and criticized the apparent FBI inquiry. Fairfax has not been charged with a crime but the 2019 allegations blunted his political career.
The California Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and death penalty for one of two men implicated in 11 horrific torture-slayings in Northern California in the mid-1980s. Charles Ng, now 61, was convicted in 1999 of killing six men, three women and two baby boys in 1984 and 1985. The high court on Thursday backed his sentence for the series of kidnappings in which they engaged in bondage and sadism while holding their victims in a remote Sierra Nevada compound. His partner, Leonard Lake, killed himself with a cyanide capsule after police arrested him for shoplifting in San Francisco in 1985.
Daniel Castano was hit on the forehead by a 104 mph line drive off the bat of Donovan Solano in the first inning of the Miami Marlins’ 7-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old left-hander fell to the field on his knees and held a hand to his head as catcher Jacob Stallings, manager Don Mattingly and athletic trainers went to the mound to check on him. Castano did not appear to lose consciousness and left the field under his own power. The Marlins said Castano showed mild concussion symptoms and was bruised.

The mayor of San Francisco announced a state of emergency Thursday over the growing number of monkeypox cases. The declaration allows officials to mobilize personnel and cut through red tape to get ahead of a public health crisis reminiscent of the AIDS epidemic that devastated San Francisco in the 1980s. Gay advocates had grown increasingly frustrated by what they called San Francisco’s lackluster response. The virus has so far largely affected men who have sex with men but can infect anyone. San Francisco has nearly a third of California's 800 cases. The emergency declaration takes effect Monday.

New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams has been acquitted in a federal tax case. The jury returned the verdict Thursday. The verdict lifts a legal cloud that had hung over Williams since before he announced he would run for the prosecutor post on a reform platform. Williams and an associate who had worked in his law practice had been accused in an indictment of conspiring to cheat on Williams’ taxes during a five-year period ending in 2017. Williams, a former City Council member, has long held that the charges were politically motivated. His associate, Nicole Burdett, was convicted on four separate counts involving her own taxes.
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron is asking a state appeals court to overturn an injunction issued last week that blocks the state’s abortion ban. The injunction ruling by a judge in Louisville prevents the state’s near-total ban on abortion from taking effect. The state’s two abortion clinics in Louisville have continued providing abortion since the judge issued a temporary restraining order in June. Cameron is asking the Kentucky Supreme Court to take up the issue, which would bypass the state Court of Appeals. He says the Louisville judge “created the Kentucky version of Roe v. Wade.”
