The nation's largest food distributor has joined the other businesses accusing the four largest meat processors of working together to inflate beef prices. Sysco recently filed a federal lawsuit in Texas accusing Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill and National Beef of price fixing. The lawsuit said those companies have conspired to suppress the number of cattle slaughtered to help drive up the price of beef. The allegations are similar to ones in lawsuits filed by grocery stores, ranchers, restaurants and other wholesalers. The companies didn't immediately respond to questions about the new lawsuit Thursday, but they have defended their actions in the other cases. The industry maintains that supply and demand drive beef prices, not anticompetitive behavior.

Uruguay has stopped administering coronavirus vaccine to children under age 13. CINCINNATI — At every stop throughout his major league career, Roansy Contreras has been known for his ability to respond. Within an inning or even sometimes at-bats, the 22-year-old is unusually mature when it comes to making adjustments and learning lessons faster than his peers. It’s one …

Nearly 300,000 children under 5 have received COVID-19 shots in the two weeks since they’ve become available. That's a slower pace than for older groups, but the White House says it was expected for the eligible U.S. population of about 18 million kids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is set to publish initial data for shots for the age group later Thursday, reflecting doses administered since regulators authorized them on June 18. The first vaccinations didn’t begin until several days later because the doses had to be shipped to doctors’ offices and pharmacies. U.S. officials had long predicted that the pace of vaccinating the youngest kids would be slower than for older groups. Most shots are expected to take place at pediatricians’ offices.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz have met in the occupied West Bank. They discussed security coordination ahead of U.S. President Joe Biden’s visit to the region next week. The peace process collapsed more than a decade ago. High-level meetings between Israeli and Palestinian leaders are rare and tend to focus on day-to-day economic and security coordination. An Israeli statement said Thursday's meeting in Ramallah was conducted in “positive terms.” An aide to Abbas says that he “stressed the importance of creating a political horizon." Ramallah is where the Palestinian Authority is headquartered.

The suspect in the killing of professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson in Texas tried to change her appearance and used several aliases as she moved around Costa Rica in an attempt to establish herself as a yoga teacher before she was tracked down by U.S. and local investigators. A U.S. Marshals Service spokesman said Thursday that Kaitlin Armstrong cut and darkened her hair. She also had bandage on her hose and discoloration under her eyes when she was arrested at a hostel on a immigration charge on June 29. She's now back in Texas facing a murder charge.

HOUSTON — In the swing game that decided whether the Kansas City Royals would have a winning or losing record for their seven-game road trip, they ran into one of the best pitchers in the game ... and their offense couldn’t keep up the high-octane production it had in recent days.

Virgilio Trujillo was shot to death June 30 in broad daylight in Puerto Ayacucho, a small border town that is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas. The head of the nation’s investigative police says a unit of detectives was sent to the area to collect clues and conduct interrogations. He says the Indigenous leader was possibly killed by oen of the ilegal armed groups in the area that smuggle gold, drugs and other contraband along the porous border with Colombia.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt is calling for a special audit of Tulsa Public Schools for what he says is a potential mishandling of public funds. Stitt said he ordered the audit on Thursday at the request of Tulsa school board members E’Lena Ashley and Jennettie Marshal. The two wrote to Stitt on July 1 to complain that state contract laws may have been violated. Telephone and email messages left Thursday with Tulsa Public Schools were not immediately returned. Stitt also raised concerns the school may be violating a new state law that he signed after the Legislature passed it last year. It prohibits the teaching of certain concepts of race and racism.

Super Bowl-winning coaches Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren are among 54 seniors, coaches and contributors named as semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. Shanahan, who led the Denver Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl titles, and Holmgren, who won with the Green Bay Packers, are joined by 27 other coaches/contributors, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and longtime Raiders CEO Amy Trask. The list of 25 former players includes four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Ken Anderson; do-it-all running back Roger Craig; return specialist Billy “White Shoes” Johnson; five-time Pro Bowl CB Lester Hayes.

Jose Altuve added a homer and three RBIs for the Astros. They bounced back after a 7-4 loss Wednesday night that snapped an eight-game winning streak. His ERA, opponent average (1.90) and WHIP (0.97) all rank second in the American League.

Cejka birdied the par-3 seventh and par-4 ninth to cap a bogey-free round on Firestone Country Club’s South Course. The 51-year-old Czech-born German is chasing his third senior major title after winning the Regions Tradition and Senior PGA last year. Dan Snyder’s attorney told the Committee on Oversight and Reform the Washington Commanders’ owner is willing to testify by video conference regarding the investigation into the team’s workplace culture following accusations of pervasive sexual harassment by team executives of women employees. In a letter sent to the committee and obtained by The Associated Press, attorney Karen Patton Seymour said Snyder is traveling outside the country and available for video testimony July 28 and 29. Seymour expressed concern because the committee countered with dates that conflict with her travel schedule and Snyder’s.

Attorneys for a white man charged with killing 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket were unable to secure a year's delay in state prosecution. Payton Gendron’s attorneys asked a judge for the delay while a federal case against him proceeds. But Erie County Court Susan Eagan during a court proceeding Thursday did grant the defense team until Oct. 6 to go through the voluminous evidence and to indicate whether they will pursue a psychiatric defense. Gendron has been held without bail since his arrest shortly after the May 14 attack at a Tops Friendly Supermarket that also left three people wounded.

The wife of Nicaraguan political activist Félix Maradiaga told journalists her husband had lost more than 65 pounds during his year in prison and she feared for his health. A day later, the government of President Daniel Ortega hauled the former potential presidential challenger before cameras for a previously unscheduled and unusual hearing to ratify the 13-year prison sentence he had already received earlier this year. The fact that a pro-government news outlet was invited, but not Maradiaga’s family — or attorneys — showed a government intent on challenging international condemnation of its sweeping crackdown on dissidents. Images from the weekend appearance showed that Maradiaga was thin, but appeared to walk and speak without difficulty.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden awarded the Medal of Freedom to two politically active female athletes — soccer star Megan Rapinoe and gymnast Simone Biles — and to the late Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs as part of his first slate of recipients of the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Northern Ireland was outclassed in its major tournament debut as Norway earned a comprehensive 4-1 victory in their European Championship group-stage opener. First-half finishes from Julie Blakstad and Frida Maanum, plus a penalty by Caroline Graham Hansen, put the two-time European champions on course for a routine win. Defender Julie Nelson gave the competition’s lowest-ranked nation brief hope of an unlikely comeback by heading in a landmark goal just after the interval. But Guro Reiten’s free kick sealed the win for Martin Sjogren’s side to move it level on three points with host England at the top of Group A.

Steve Spurrier became a Florida Gators’ legend playing quarterback and later coaching many of the best in school history.

Authorities say a Michigan tourist who tried to retrace the steps of a family who died during a grueling summer hike in Northern California had to be rescued last week after getting lost. A frustrated Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said in a statement posted on social media that the man, who has not been identified, was reported missing near the trail where officials last year found the bodies of Jonathan Gerrish, his wife, their toddler and their dog. Officials determined the family and their dog died of extreme heat exhaustion after running out of water. The man told another hiker he was in the area investigating the deaths because he found the official cause of death “odd.”
