Totland window cleaner Jason Daniels is to walk from The Needles to Bembridge dressed as Peppa Pig to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which recently cared for his 2-year-old daughter.

Jason wanted to donate money to the hospital as a thank you for their painstaking work on reconstructing the skull of his 2-year-old daughter Savannah, who suffers from craniosynostosis – a rare condition where a baby’s skull does not grow properly and their head becomes an unusual shape.

Savannah was operated on at Great Ormond Street Hospital on Monday 21st March. Her skull was cut from ear to ear, then the scalp pulled down to the top of her eyes. The middle to the front of her skull was cut off, removed and returned backwards. The operation has left her with an oversized forehead, which she will grow into over time.

Savannah’s surgery went well until near the end when her breathing tube got blocked for about 80 seconds, and her heart slowed right down. Her surgeons were obliged to perform CPR, but once her breathing tube had been changed, she was out of danger.

The toddler’s prognosis is now good. A month after her operation, she is not in any pain and her stitches are falling out. She will receive regular check-ups until she is 12 years old but is fully expected to lead a normal and healthy life.

Jason’s Peppa Pig Island Walk is set for 4th and 5th June. He will start on the Saturday morning at The Needles at around 08:00, before traveling through Totland, Freshwater and Yarmouth and along the main road to Newport. On the Sunday, he will start again around 08:00 in Newport, then walk along Fairlee Road to Ryde and along Ryde beach to Bembridge.

Jason will carry a money box for people to make donations and people are welcome to take pictures of themselves and their children with Peppa Pig along the route. Anyone wanting to join Jason along the way is welcome to do so, especially if willing to dress up.

“Things are finally settled down at home now with little one and I’m so pleased to say she is making a huge recovery and doing unbelievably well. It was the hardest thing we have ever experienced in our lives. We were crying with pain, but we are now crying with joy.

“Children are our future. Keeping them healthy is paramount. They will be our doctors and nurses when we grow old. Raising funds for Great Ormond Street research will enable doctors and surgeons to carry on doing amazing things like restructuring the skulls of babies and children.”

If anyone would like to donate to Jason Daniels’ cause, the just giving page can be found at www.justgiving.com/jason-daniels-peppa-pig.

The Peppa Pig outfit has been donated free of charge by Kent Mascot Party Hire.
